There is a printable checklist (in Excel) available for Magical Mystery Tour
The Haight-Ashbury District in San Francisco was an inexpensive residential area that had a large hippie population, including many musicians such as Janis Joplin and members of the Grateful Dead. -- contributed by Lisa R.
Vinyl records were produced in 7", 10" and 12" sizes, all playing at 45 rpm. However, when people refer to a "45", they are referring to the 7" version of the vinyl 45 rpm. The records were originally colour-coded by genre. 45 rpm records were first released in 1949 by RCA Victor and contained one single per side - the A-side song was released on the radio and expected to be a hit, while the B-side song was a song that was not released on radio and was often not even on the band's full LP. ---contributed by Lisa R.
The text on the top part of the 45 RPM's label, where the record company name would normally be placed reads "Alamofire", the makers of PackRat. Although barely legible even on the largest version of the card graphic, the text towards the bottom of the label appears to read "SONG TITLE SONG TITLE". The orange spiral-like structure in the centre is a spindle size adapter for switching between the chunky turntable spindles on Radio Corporation of America (RCA) equipment and the smaller spindles on other manufacturers' machines. ---contributed by James Turner
The actual name of the music festival that we know as "Woodstock" was "An Aquarian Exposition", and was presented by "The Woodstock Music and Art Fair". ---contributed by Lisa R.
"Magical Mystery Tour" is the name of a Beatle's song, as well as album, and movie. Interesting that this is the name of this set...The Beatles did not play at Woodstock. They were originally invited but John Lennon refused the invitation on the basis that the promotors would not agree to also invite Yoko Ono's band. ---contributed by Lisa R.
The design of the Mod button is based on the emblem painted on British Royal Air Force (RAF) aircraft to indicate their nationality, specifically the type D roundel used from June 1947 to date, in which the radii of the three coloured areas are in the ratio 1:2:3.
The roundel, especially the RAF's, has been associated with British pop art of the 1960s, appearing in paintings by Jasper Johns. It became part of the pop consciousness after British rock group The Who started to wear RAF roundels (and Union Flags) as part of their stage apparel at the start of their career. Subsequently it came to symbolise Mods and the Mod Revival. (Ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roundel) ---contributed by James Turner
The Magical Mystery Tour's MOD button can be found on the side of the Urban Hipster collection's Pair of High Tops --- contributed by Angela McK.
Ye Ye Girl is actually spelled Yé-Yé Girl --- Jim P.
Yé-yé was a style of pop music that emerged out of France, Québec and Spain in the early 1960s. The term "yé-yé" derived from "yeah! yeah!" yell.
The Peace Patch card show the badge of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), subsequently used as a general peace/anti-war emblem. The design is based on the semaphore signal for "N" (flags pointing down in upside-down "V" shape) superimposed with "D" (right hand flag pointing straight up, left hand flag straight down), standing for Nuclear Disarmament. ---contributed by James Turner
The People's Bus is modelled after a first generation ("T1") Volkswagen Type 2, a vehicle popular with the 1960s/70s "hippie" movement. Volkswagen (meaning "People's Car" in German) was founded in 1938 to manufacture the famous Beetle (or Käfer), a low-cost vechicle aimed at everyday working people, designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche at the request of Adolf Hitler. Owners during the "hippie" era sometimes removed the VW badge from the front, replacing it with a painted Peace Symbol (CND logo) similar to that shown on the PackRat card. ---contributed by James Turner
